The Ugliest Mailbox in America?

Ugly Mailbox January 21st, 2009

Lani Diane Rich's Ugly Mailbox

Lani Diane Rich's Ugly Mailbox

I’m not sure if it’s the ugliest in America, because I’ve seen my fair share, but Lani Diane Rich wants to toss her hat into the competition.  You didn’t know there was a contest did  you?

For all of us that have wondered, “What were they thinking?” you can read the story behind this one on her blog.  While you’re there stick around and read more of her entries,  she’s a great writer with a wonderful sense of humor.

And, you know… yeah. It’s really, really ugly. But the plow guys will SEE IT. And right now, that’s really all I care about. So… yay me!

I also like that she has two first names. It reminds me of the “Two First Names” SNL skit with Neil Patrick Harris that aired on the 10th. I can’t find a clip of it anywhere but it’s about a celebrity talk show for stars with, you guessed it, two first names. Neil Patrick Harris is the host and the “band” includes Jamie Lynn Spears and David Lee Roth. His guests are Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Clark Duncan, Billy Bob Thornton, Tommy Lee Jones, Julia Louis Dreyfus and Daniel “Dave” Lewis. When Daniel corrects Harris and tell him it’s “Day-Lewis”, Harris tells him to “get the hell out of there with your one first name only.” Good stuff.

Ginormous Mailbox

Unusual Mailbox January 16th, 2009

It’s hard to get an idea of how large this mailbox is from this picture. However, Kevin S. says that the mailbox his father built for him is large enough to fit a postal tub into… so yes, that’s pretty darn big.

John Deere Mailbox

Gary H. from Coleharbor, ND sent in this picture of his John Deere tractor mailbox. He says,

It was made by a fellow who recycles scrap iron from old farm implements.

Mailbox News Stories January 12th, 2009

Last week I was contacted Monica Sotomayor, a journalist from FlashNews, who loved “the quirky concept” of my blog and wrote a story about my site for the news wire.

Ugly Mailboxes Make Neighbors Go Postal
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (Wireless Flash – FlashNews) – Some people go postal over the sight of an ugly mailbox.

Uglymailbox.com is a website that features pictures of hideous, weird, and unique mailboxes from all over the world.

Among the wacky creations is a mailbox shaped like a microwave, a mailbox held up by an elaborate tin robot, one shaped like a circus caravan – lion and all – and one in the likeness of the Taj Mahal.

Site founder Linda Fannin-Church believes people deck out their mailboxes as a form of self-expression, though really tacky ones can cause trouble with neighbors.

She once posted a picture of a mailbox shaped like a weird deer and people from its Michigan neighborhood bombarded her website with disapproving comments.

They complained that the mailbox was so ugly, it was making the entire neighborhood look bad and demanded reform.

However, not everyone hates manic mailboxes.

Fannin-Church imagines that the creative ones make postal workers smile because it breaks up the monotony of their route, though she has yet to hear feedback from an actual mailman.

As a result I was asked to do a couple radio “phoners”, one with Phil Parker of pH pHactor on KFYR in Bismark, North Dakota. Then I spoke with Brent Farris from KZST -Sonoma County, CA.

I have the recording of the KFYR show. UglyMailbox Radio Interview

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who’s submitted mailbox photos, subscribed to my site, visited and commented.

It’s nice to know that crazy has company :)

My Blog’s Evil Twin

Miscellaneous November 21st, 2008

Yes, we have it… a *gasp* PrettyMailbox.com

I learned about the site a while ago when I saw an advertisement for it on the back of a minivan.  Today they submitted a couple of pictures of their wildlife Mailbox Static Cling covers:

Not quite my style, but I was curious to see what holiday covers they had.  I have the most boring mailbox ever and thought I could spruce it up a little for Christmas.

It seems they don’t have their Holiday designs up yet, but I did come across some funky designs that I really liked.

They have designs in just about every category you can think of and I love their tag line: “Going Postal Has Never Been This Pretty”.

Wish I would have thought of it first, “Going Postal Has Never Been This Ugly!”

Festive Fall Mailboxes

Vehicle Mailbox November 14th, 2008

Love it or hate it, it’s the “holidays” and if you’re not in the spirit yet, perhaps these mailboxes will inspire you.

From the Ed Witles collection:

And from Teresa M.

I just recently purchased and painted a mailbox planter that sits on top of my mailbox and attaches underneath. I have decorated it for Thanksgiving and will be changing it out for Christmas. It’s a great idea and I look forward to spring when I can plant it in real annuals. If interested you can find it at creativemailboxplanters.com It is made of an eco-friendly plastic so it should last for several years to come.

Thanks Teresa and Mr. Witles for sharing your Turkey day mailboxes with us.

For the Dems

Animal Mailbox August 26th, 2008

Since this week is the Democratic National Convention, you can show your support by buying one of these:

From somewhere like Pinehill Woodcrafts or Mailboxes and Stuff.

Just a note, I don’t care who you’re voting for and I likely won’t approve any political commentary.  This is a blog about crazy mailboxes, not Presidential canidates.
