Clothesline Mailbox
Unusual Mailbox February 14th, 2008
This was sent in by Bob E
Found this one in the Catskill mountains just outside of Windham, NY. Looks like a great time saver. Take in the clothes and the mail in one trip. Or does one just reel-in the mail? Photo by my friend Sheila.
I gotta say, this mailbox is the finest piece of Appalachian-American handy work I’ve seen in a long time.

My first thought was that it is a notification system. Mailman pulls down the mailbox door, it tugs the rope, which rings a bell attached to the house. Of course, then you wouldn’t need a pulley system. Whatever it is — it’s genius!

They should put a can on both ends and have the mailman read the mail to them.

Kathy – It’s something!
Vacuum – See that would make sense.

My thought is that the mailman actually puts the mail on the clothes line and reels it to the house. That’s actually kinda clever, especially if there’s someone older in the house who can’t get around. It’s not that unsightly either. Looks kinda picturesque especially coming from the Catskill Mountains. Thanks for the post!

Looks like it would be hard to get it back into place once you’ve pulled in your mail… funny idea though.

It doesn’t look very sturdy and it’s awfully low. I think the only thing one could hang on it with any security, is undies.
I linked to you a while ago and enjoy dropping in periodically.

Robot – If you look at the last picture, you’ll see the ropes end at the post under the stairs, so I’m not sure how much of a walk it’s saving them?
Judi – I know, we need video!
Poetikat – If I were any good with photoshop, and would have thought of that first, undies would have been in! And thanks for returning

That is kind of funny. I can hear the music from Deliverence playing in the background!
