Tasmanian Mailboxes
Unusual Mailbox October 22nd, 2007
From Joe M.
I came across these mailboxes on North Bruny Island in Tasmania early last year. I now use the picture as my desktop background so that I can park active files on the various boxes.
What a neat idea for a desktop, Joe.
I love that other countries don’t have the postal requirements for mailboxes that the US does.

That turquoise one looks like a kitty litter box. And is that second one from the right an homage to duct tape? Hey, at least they’re all in a straight line!

The turquoise one is a plastic drum probably used for pesticide, sheep dip or detergent. There are 4 drums of that kind in different colours.
The silver one would be the innards of a washing machine.
The blue one is a toolbox.
I think the very first one is a biscuit tin or a breakfast cereal container.

I think that barrel-shaped one is a washing machine drum. Nice! I knew I should have converted our old treadmill into a mailbox instead of taking it to the recycling center.

Forest – No Syrup barrel mailboxes? or Cheese shaped mailboxes? What the heck?
Kathy – speaking of kitty litter boxes have you see this one? http://ypcommando.com/images/redneck_mailbox.jpg
Jason – Yes! I’ve posted a couple here from that group before. It’s where I go when I run out of original or submitted material
Joe – Thanks again for sending that in and for explaining what the all are.
artbot – if you convert your treadmill you should see if you can rig it up to always be on, so the postman has to walk on it as he places the mail in the box. And get a picture!

Hey,
I can’t believe that you actually found this photo!
I live in Tasmania and my uncle owns a camping property down the very end of this road! Believe me – we’re not all hillbillys – its just soo funny finding this photo online!
I’ve spent most of my holidays here since I was born (i’m 18 now!!) and this photo just brings up so many memories!!
Infact my cousin was caught speeding on this very t junction! (note: there’s only one policeman on the whole of bruny island and he just happened to be driving past at the right moment!)
all the best with the mailboxes – there’s plenty in tasmania – if you get a chance then check out “doo town” down the tasman peninsula where every house is called doo something (i.e. doo-little, doo-me, love-me-doo etc) most of which is posted on letterboxes or signs on the house!
